Talk of Newcastle moving for Jose Mourinho is nonsense – opinion

According to Italian journalist Maurizio Catalani, Newcastle United are ‘thinking seriously’ about a move for AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho.

Why? Why on earth would they be doing that?

Newcastle United’s new owners made their first big decision in October, relieving Steve Bruce of his duties. Plenty of high profile replacements were linked, some more serious than others.

In the end, Amanda Staveley and co went with Eddie Howe, and their decision is starting to pay off.

The fans quickly got behind the new manager, but it’s only in recent weeks that results have really started to improve. Howe’s side are currently on a three-game winning run, and haven’t lost in the league since December 19th.

Survival looks more likely right now than it ever has this season, which was the main objective for Howe when he arrived.

So why on earth would the Newcastle United owners be thinking about a replacement?!

Speaking to Italian website Giallorossi.net, Catalani said: “If Roma do not make a just and important transfer campaign, I have my strong doubts that Mourinho will stay with Roma.

“He doesn’t stay here to take four goals from Verona. I know Newcastle, who have an unlimited budget and are currently the richest club in the world, are thinking seriously about it.”

We’ll stick with Eddie Howe thanks

This sounds like absolute rubbish – a nonsense story that seems unlikely to be based on any truth.

Mourinho is a huge name in football, and may fancy a move to Newcastle now they’re one of the richest clubs in the world.

Combine that with his relationship with club legend Sir Bobby Robson, and the Special One in the St James’ Park dugout might make sense.

But it would be a recipe for disaster. Mourinho is not the manager he once was, and his past few moves have ended horrendously.

Yes, Mourinho is a bigger name than Howe. But he is absolutely not the kind of manager the Magpies need. Howe is.

The 44-year-old is a young and exciting coach who is both measured and ambitious in his approach. He’s doing a fantastic job, and things will hopefully continue to get even better.

Newcastle’s owners want the club to compete at the top of the footballing ladder. Those outside of the club might say they have no chance of doing that with a manager like Eddie Howe, but why not?

As long as Howe is doing well and the fans are on his side, there is no need for change at St James’ Park.

Talk of Newcastle ‘thinking seriously’ about Jose Mourinho is absolute rubbish.
