Newcastle United want to sign Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Lepzig this summer, but suddenly face competition from Liverpool.
The Magpies look set to turn to the 22-year-old after deciding against a move for James Maddison. Eddie Howe is keen to sign an attacking midfielder, and it looks like Szoboszlai is a much better fit.
He has a £60million release clause, but Newcastle are hoping they can negotiate a cheaper deal after holding talks with Leipzig.
However, Newcastle are not the only club to hold talks.
Liverpool make move to sign Dominik Szoboszlai
According to the Athletic, Liverpool are considering a move to sign Szoboszlai this summer. They report that the Reds have held talks with his representatives about heading to Anfield.

The report adds that Jurgen Klopp’s side accept that it will be a difficult deal to do – although there is no explanation given as to why that is the case.
It might be because of finances, or it might be because of competition from Newcastle. Or it could be because of something Szoboszlai said back in May when speculation over a move away from RB Leipzig started to intensify.
What Szoboszlai said about his future last month
Heading into the final few games of the season, Szoboszlai spoke to the media in Germany and refused to commit his future to RB Leipzig.
When the Hungarian was asked about his future, he said: “I’m definitely still with RB Leipzig for three games. I would like to play in the Champions League and would like to win my second trophy with RB Leipzig. We will see what happens after the summer.”
Szoboszlai did win his second trophy with RB Leipzig, and he will play in the Champions League if he stays put. He will also have that luxury if he moves to Newcastle, but that won’t be the case if he decides to join Liverpool.
Advantage Newcastle
Klopp’s side finished outside of the top four last season, and will have to settle for competing in the Europa League. There is no shame in that, but it does dent their ability to attract players to Merseyside.

In contrast, Tyneside is more appealing than ever. Newcastle are on the up, and have the lure of Champions League football.
If that is Szoboszlai’s immediate goal then surely the Magpies are the favourites to sign him ahead of Liverpool. If he joins us, he can play at the level he wants.
The big question is longevity. Will we qualify next season? When you compare Newcastle and Liverpool, one club is more likely to qualify for the Champions League on a consistent basis, and sadly it is not us at the moment.
But when it comes to his summer, Champions League qualification should give us the edge over Liverpool in the race to sign Szoboszlai. And that is coming from the horse’s mouth.
