Paul Mitchell was right all along as Fabrizio Romano makes fresh Bryan Mbeumo claim

Newcastle United have opted against signing Bryan Mbeumo, and it is easy to understand why.

While the Magpies are desperate for a new right winger and Bryan Mbeumo is a player who would walk into their starting XI, they are not going to overpay.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle feel Mbeumo is too expensive, as Manchester United step up their efforts to sign the 25-year-old.

They are yet to agree a fee with Brentford and a deal for the Cameroon international certainly will not be cheap.

Manchester United launch first bid for Bryan Mbeumo

The Red Devils have launched an opening bid for Mbeumo, but it is not enough for Brentford to accept.

According to Fabrizio Romano on X, Man United’s first offer for Mbeumo is £45million plus £10million in add-ons.

Romano adds that Brentford are looking to receive £70million for the winger, but could negotiate down from that amount to a fee similar to what Matheus Cunha cost (£62.5million).

Newcastle United must implement Paul Mitchell’s transfer plan

If Newcastle United were going to sign Mbeumo, they would almost need to break their transfer record. That honour belongs to Alexander Isak, who is Newcastle’s most expensive signing at £63million.

With a lot of business to be done this summer, Newcastle are wise to distance themselves from Mbeumo. They also need to sign a centre-back, goalkeeper and a striker, which would be very difficult if most of the budget went towards Mbeumo.

That is why Newcastle United must heed Paul Mitchell’s advice.

It was reported in December 2024 that Mitchell wanted Newcastle to buy more players from across Europe, rather than rely on proven Premier League talent. After all, they cost a premium.

Mbeumo is proving that, which is why Newcastle United need to take their winger search overseas.

If Newcastle are still not fully convinced that shopping abroad is the right thing to do, they do not need to look much further than PSG. They signed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli for £59million.

Newcastle chose not to sign Kvaratskhelia a few years ago, with Toon officials feeling it was not worth the risk. That has proven to be the wrong decision, with the 24-year-old establishing himself as a world class talent.

The Magpies do have winger targets from overseas, but it remains to be seen who they are. Eddie Howe’s side have been heavily linked with Johan Bakayoko throughout 2025, but talk of him moving to Tyneside has gone very quiet in recent months.
