Opinion: Newcastle could have the chance to sign Mo Salah next year

Newcastle United could sign Mo Salah from Liverpool next summer. It might sound ludicrous right now, but just hear me out…

All the talk right now is about who the Magpies will sign this summer. There are exciting links with players like Sven Botman and Moussa Diaby. They would be wonderful additions to Eddie Howe’s squad.

There have also been ridiculous rumours, with the words ‘Neymar’ and ‘Newcastle’ somehow ending up in the same sentence. That won’t happen for a multitude of reasons.

Salah is another footballing megastar who won’t be at St James’ Park next season, except for when his side Liverpool head to town. However, there is an outside chance of a transfer to the Toon in 2023.

Mo Salah’s Liverpool contract expires next summer

The 29-year-old has had another sensational season at Anfield, winning the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. It almost went from a double to a quadruple, but Liverpool fell short in their pursuit of the Premier League and Champions League.

It’s been a great season on a personal level for Salah too, sharing the golden boot with Son Heung Min and getting more assists than any other Premier League player. In the words of Jurgen Klopp, he’s ‘world class’.

However, his contract situation has always been rumbling on in the background. His current deal expires in 2023, with talks over an extension yet to be concluded. This has led to speculation regarding his future at the club.

Salah is staying at Liverpool this summer, but his future beyond next season is unclear. The Athletic have reported that if he does become a free agent next year then he’d rather join another Premier League club than head overseas.

And that’s where Newcastle come into it…

Newcastle could have the chance to sign him

Following the Saudi-backed takeover, Newcastle have the finances to compete with every side in the world. Of course, there are financial fair play limitations that are hindering us this summer. That’s why a move for Lucas Paqueta feels unlikely.

But Salah would be available on a free transfer, which means a deal wouldn’t be as expensive as it would be this year.

And if he does want to stay in the Premier League, where else could he go?

A move to Manchester City may tarnish his legacy at Liverpool, while Manchester United are out of the question too. Chelsea is a possibility, given he probably has unfinished business at Stamford Bridge. Then you’ve got Arsenal and Spurs…

When you look at his options, Newcastle might actually have a chance. But that might largely depend on what we do next season. Another year in mid-table will hardly tempt Salah to St James’ Park.

The new owners will want a poster boy for their Newcastle project, and they can surely find no one better than Salah.

It’s a massive longshot, but if Salah does become a free agent next summer then we surely have an outside chance.

Realistically, he’ll probably extend his stay at Liverpool, but let’s allow ourselves to at least dream…
