It was the kind of game where Nick Woltemade could have made himself an instant icon at Newcastle, but it didn’t turn out that way at all.
Thankfully, the fans got behind Woltemade immediately, and the player has repaid that faith and support instantly, too.

Nick Woltemade has not let own goal get him down
Since that game at the Stadium of Light, Woltemade has put in two great performances; both of which were brilliant for different reasons.
On Wednesday night against Fulham, Woltemade came off the bench and made himself a nuisance. He used his clever footwork and physicality to get in dangerous areas in the attacking third, hold up play, and link intelligently with his teammates.
There was no goal to celebrate there, but they came against Chelsea. Not only did he score twice, but Woltemade played his best game in a Newcastle shirt with his all-round play.
The fact he has come out fighting, scoring, and smiling is massive for Woltemade and bodes well for the fact he will continue to thrive at Newcastle by putting that own goal firmly behind him. By the looks of it, he’s forgotten about it already.

Newcastle United fans will help Woltemade forget his mistake
Woltemade spoke about the supporters and the impact they’ve had on him, in particular how grateful he is that they’ve stuck by him post-Sunderland.
It is the fans who will help Woltemade continue his fantastic progress at Newcastle, and if he continues on this trajectory, he could well become a bona fide legend at the club. At the very least, he will go down as a cult icon.
Supporters can see how much this means to Woltemade. You only have to look at his goal celebration against Chelsea to realise that, and if there’s one thing that will win the fans over, it’s passion and adoration for the club.
It’s still early days, but Woltemade has the potential to be one of the best strikers Newcastle have had in the 21st century. He’s certainly got the right attitude, that’s for sure.
