Newcastle will be furious about the £17.65m transfer that Chelsea are aiming to complete today

Newcastle United’s summer transfer plans have been ruined by PSR.

The Magpies had two major priorities going into this summer’s transfer window, but it looks like Newcastle United are not going to address either of them.

Newcastle have pulled out of a deal to sign Marc Guehi, who was the only centre-back that Eddie Howe wanted.

Toon officials have also been keen to sign a winger, but that deal is not going to happen either. If they had signed Guehi, there was not going to be enough money for Newcastle to bring in a top level winger as well.

And even though the Guehi deal is suddenly off, it is seemingly too late for Newcastle to shift their attention towards a winger.

Newcastle’s frustrations are being driven by PSR, which continues to hold the club back financially. Eddie Howe says PSR has made this a difficult summer, with Newcastle unable to sign a single player who improves their starting XI.

Chelsea set to sell Deivid Washington for £17.65m

In contrast, Chelsea have continued to lavishly splash the cash and not suffer the repercussions of PSR.

They have brought in Pedro Neto, who was a player that Newcastle United wanted to sign.

The amount of signings Chelsea have made has frustrated Toon fans, but their plan for deadline day will be even more infuriating.

According to L’Equipe, Chelsea have agreed to sell Deivid Washington to Strasbourg for £17.65million.

It will be a club record deal for the Ligue 1 club, who are owned by the American consortium BlueCo – the same consortium that own Chelsea.

Chelsea set to make Washington profit

So Todd Boehly is on course to sell one of his Chelsea outcasts to another one of his clubs for a fairly sizeable fee.

While less than £20million is not a huge amount of money in today’s game, it would represent a profit for Chelsea.

They signed Deivid Washington from Santos last summer for an initial £13.45million, handing him a seven-year deal. Since then, the Brazilian forward has played 25 minutes of first-team football for the Blues.

It is no wonder Newcastle United fans are so enraged about PSR

The influx of cash will help Chelsea’s PSR situation, while Newcastle United continue to struggle.

What they are doing is not illegal – otherwise it would not be happening – but it is a backdoor tactic to keep them in a positive financial position.

It would be no different to Newcastle flogging off their unneeded players to the clubs that PIF own in Saudi Arabia. But that does not appear to be happening, with Newcastle doing no transfers with Saudi Arabian sides since Allan Saint-Maximin’s move there last year. And even that deal came under scrutiny, despite the Magpies not even getting a particularly massive fee for an extremely talented player.

It is such a frustrating situation, as the financial rules continue to hold Newcastle United back from challenging the elite. It forced the club to cash in on the likes of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh earlier this summer, yet still it has not resulted in Newcastle being able to really splash the cash.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are about to make a profit on a player who has barely kicked a ball by selling them to another club that is funded by the same ownership. It is no wonder Toon fans are so frustrated.
