The Paul Mitchell saga at Newcastle United is taking some rather ugly turns.
Mitchell arrived at Newcastle United in 2024 but will leave the club at some point in June, lasting less than a year in his role as sporting director.
There has now been some confusion as to when exactly he’ll leave, too. Newcastle are in chaos because, as revealed by The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, no one is quite sure on the point of contact as the club try to conduct transfer business.
Eddie Howe wants Newcastle to sign players quickly but it’s hard to imagine how that is possible when there’s so much uncertainty right now.
With that in mind, it’s worth looking at what Newcastle actually said when they appointed Mitchell in 2024.

Newcastle United’s statement on Paul Mitchell in 2024
After appointing Mitchell in 2024, a statement was posted onto Newcastle United’s official website.
He arrived just after the PSR nightmare Newcastle got themselves into last summer, where they had to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh against their wishes.
At the time, the club said they were looking for sustainability. A statement from CEO Darren Eales read: “We look forward to working with Paul and supporting him in our pursuit of long-term, sustainable success.”
Little about what’s happening now looks sustainable. Hope’s aforementioned update points to the fact that there’s a huge amount of uncertainty at the club right now.
That cannot be a good thing during a hugely important transfer window. It has been two years since the club made a first-team signing and though Howe was able to perform miracles last season, that just cannot go on forever. The Newcastle United squad needs help.
There’s a Champions League campaign to prepare for. There are key players to keep happy and motivated.
Without a strong structure in place, everything becomes more difficult. The ‘sustainability’ Newcastle were chasing when appointing Mitchell has been profoundly lacking.
What PIF promised Paul Mitchell is looking foolish now
Mitchell joined Newcastle because he was promised greater control of the club’s recruitment policy, although it remains unclear as to how much impact he actually had.
The fact that Newcastle United owners PIF trust Howe in the transfer market would suggest perhaps he hasn’t had all that much.
Mitchell’s five Newcastle signings may one day prove to be masterstroke additions. Mitchell also helped Newcastle with their PSR position, so it’s not all been bad.
However, in their search for sustainability long-term, the decision to appoint Mitchell has cast the club into chaos right now.
There’s still time to recover in this summer’s window, but it is hardly an ideal situation in which to operate.
