Newcastle United fans immediately understood just how talented Yankuba Minteh was when he arrived in 2023.

The winger joined Newcastle United from Odense BK for £6million, with Dan Ashworth striking a deal for the youngster.

As part of the announcement of his arrival, the club confirmed that Yankuba Minteh would be spending the season on loan at Feyenoord. That was an immediate statement of intent, as the Rotterdam club were competing in the Champions League alongside Newcastle United that season.

The fact that Feyenoord were happy to take Minteh on loan was an indication of his ability, and he lived up to the hype so much that he joined Brighton for £33million the following summer.

Newcastle United fielding major loan interest in Antonio Cordero

Now Newcastle United could have another Minteh situation on their hands, as they get set to decide Antonio Cordero’s next move.

Newcastle announced the signing of Cordero last week, with the 18-year-old set to be loaned out for the duration of the 2025/26 season.

It has been reported that Ajax want Cordero, who is also attracting interest from Spain and Germany. The fact that Ajax are keen speaks volumes, as they will be part of next season’s Champions League.

Once again, the Magpies have the chance to send an exciting young talent to a top level team that will be taking part in European football’s elite competition. It could help fast-track Cordero to stardom.

Newcastle think Cordero can be a Champions League player for them, and it might not take long to discover whether or not that is the case.

Not every Newcastle United loan goes as well as Yankuba Minteh’s

While sending Minteh to the Eredivisie was a stroke of genius, not every loan move to the Netherlands has worked out for Newcastle United’s youngsters.

In the same summer that Minteh went to Feyenoord, Garang Kuol was loaned out to FC Volendam.

They were competing at the opposite end of the division, while turmoil behind the scenes resulted in Kuol’s loan spell becoming a disaster.

Elsewhere, Newcastle sent Miodrag Pivas to Willem II last summer. The Serbian defender is suddenly the forgotten man, making just five Eredivisie appearances during the 2024/25 campaign. They were all as a substitute, with Pivas spending most of the season on the bench.

Toon officials will have everything crossed that Cordero follows in Minteh’s footsteps as opposed to Kuol or Pivas.
