Joe Willock’s return to the Newcastle United team may eventually see him sold.
This season, Willock has already made four starts for Newcastle United. Last time out, the 26-year-old only made a total of 16, and he was largely fit for most of the campaign.
Though many fans may have expected Jacob Ramsey to be the main alternative to the likes of Joelinton in Eddie Howe’s first team, it’s actually been Willock who has seen more action.
It may feel like a very long time ago now but the former Arsenal midfielder has previously been a key player for the club.

Willock was a shining light in the Steve Bruce era, while he also played a big part of Newcastle’s success in the 2023/24 season.
Still, Willock has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace.
With that in mind, and coupled with the fact his contract expires in 2027, it may mean his recent return to the first team could actually make a move away more likely.

Such is Howe’s loyalty to Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which those three don’t play when it comes to the biggest games.
However, the fixture schedule is relentless for Newcastle right now. They cannot be expected to do it all.
Ramsey will be expected to step up and needs to do so quickly after a relatively poor performance during Newcastle’s win over Burnley.

Willock, right now, is doing what Ramsey isn’t. Is he back to his absolute best? Definitely not, but there are promising signs.
Indeed, Willock played well for Newcastle against Marseille and continued his reasonably good form against the Clarets.

Why Newcastle United should still sell Joe Willock despite his recent good form
The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are a moving landscape.
Just because Newcastle are currently in a good PSR position, it doesn’t mean they always will be.
Players do need to be sold and while Willock has started to build towards some decent form, it’s surely still not enough to warrant a new contract.
With that in mind, putting himself in the shop window is a good thing for Newcastle. It’s easy to say the club should sell players, but there need to be buyers.
It’s brilliant to see Willock get back into form, given the extent of his injury issues over the years.
Hopefully, he’s doing enough to convince a club to make an offer before his contract expires in the summer of 2027.
