Newcastle United transfer decision suddenly haunts Eddie Howe, he’ll regret it now

Newcastle United may have some regret over how the summer transfer window panned out.

The Alexander Isak situation went on far too long, while the Magpies started the summer by missing out on multiple key targets.

By the time the window had closed, the Newcastle United squad looked very different. Six senior faces arrived, while there were plenty of outgoings.

Sean Longstaff joined Leeds and Martin Dubravka went to Burnley. They are both shining at their new clubs, but the decision to let them go was the correct one.

However, it could suddenly be a different story for Matt Targett.

Newcastle United may regret loaning out Matt Targett

Geordie Boot Boys broke the news that Targett was joining Middlesbrough on loan for the 2025/26 season, with the deal becoming official on 27th August.

Targett is playing brilliantly for Middlesbrough, who look like early contenders to win promotion to the Premier League.

However, Eddie Howe will suddenly wish that Targett was a Premier League player this season.

That is because of Tino Livramento’s injury, with the defender set for a spell on the sidelines after being stretchered off against Arsenal.

Despite primarily being a right-back, it is at left-back where Newcastle have problems. Livramento has played there a lot this season, with Lewis Hall having to wait for his opportunity.

Now Hall will get that opportunity, but there is a distinct lack of cover for the £28million man. Dan Burn can play at left-back, but he is much better in the middle of defence.

Targett would have offered that cover, and Howe would have been more than happy. The Newcastle United manager always spoke glowingly of the 30-year-old, who left the club for regular first-team football.

He is getting that at Middlesbrough, but he also could have got it at Newcastle United. It is easy to say in hindsight, but Howe may suddenly wish that Targett was still a member of his squad.

Alex Murphy could get an opportunity at Newcastle United

With no Targett to back up Lewis Hall, the honour could belong to Alex Murphy.

The Irish defender is well-liked by Eddie Howe, with the Toon boss handing him his debut during the 2023/24 season.

Howe also played Murphy in the Carabao Cup against Bradford City recently, giving the youngster valuable minutes at the heart of defence.

He is capable of playing at left-back and centre-back, and could see an opportunity come his way in the aftermath of Tino Livramento’s injury.
