Newcastle United suffer a Yoane Wissa blow just 24 hours after Hugo Ekitike debacle

As Newcastle United face up to the reality of missing out on Hugo Ekitike, they prepare to turn their attention to Yoane Wissa.

While Ekitike is going to join Liverpool, Newcastle United are still very much in desperate need of another striker. As it stands, they are going into the new season with just Alexander Isak and Will Osula leading the line.

That should change, with Newcastle interested in Yoane Wissa as an alternative to Ekitike. Wissa would be a great signing for Newcastle, with the 28-year-old’s stock higher than ever after scoring 20 goals for Brentford in the 2024/25 season.

But while Wissa would be welcome on Tyneside, Eddie Howe’s hope of striking a deal may have just taken a hit.

Brentford accept Bryan Mbeumo offer

While the Magpies weigh up a move for Wissa, Brentford are in the process of selling another top star.

It was reported on Thursday that Manchester United have made a new offer for Bryan Mbeumo, and that offer is going to be enough to take him to Old Trafford.

According to the Athletic, Brentford have agreed to sell Mbeumo to Manchester United in a deal worth £71million including add-ons.

Newcastle wanted Mbeumo too, but decided that he was too expensive. That has certainly proven to be the case, with Newcastle signing Anthony Elanga for £55million instead.

Brentford’s decision could hurt Newcastle United’s Yoane Wissa hopes

Newcastle will be happy to be proven right over Mbeumo, but there will now be fear that their move for Wissa could be at risk.

That is because Brentford could be unwilling to sell Mbeumo and Wissa during the same transfer window. It has already been a summer of change at the Gtech Community Stadium with Thomas Frank leaving, and now Mbeumo is on his way out too.

A third major departure in the shape of Wissa could be a bridge too far, which is no use for a Newcastle United side who are desperate for attacking reinforcements.

However, the Magpies must have some faith that a deal for Wissa is possible even with Mbeumo leaving Brentford. While that saga with Man United has dragged on, a move to Old Trafford has always felt likely.
