Newcastle transfer news: Burnley want £25million for Nathan Collins

Newcastle have been told to pay £25million to sign Nathan Collins this summer.

That’s according to The Mirror (print edition, page 73, June 19, 2022). who claim the defender could leave Burnley following the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Leeds, Aston Villa, and Wolves are also interested in signing Collins. After being relegated on the final day of last season, Burnley are now in a difficult financial situation. They will therefore need to sell some players this summer to boost their coffers.

However, Newcastle shouldn’t sign Collins. The Magpies do need to strengthen in defence, but this particular deal wouldn’t be the best fit for them.

Newcastle might as well go all out on someone who is more established than Collins

We believe Newcastle shouldn’t buy Collins. There’s no doubt the 21-year-old has shown promise this season with Burnley and is already a Republic of Ireland international.

Ex-Clarets boss Sean Dyche certainly liked the youngster, describing his attitude as ‘fantastic‘ late last year.

But Collins’ fee is too high for someone who’s played just one season in the Premier League. They’re better off spending an extra £10 million or so to try and land Sven Botman.

The Dutchman has his heart set on a move to AC Milan if the Italian press is to be believed. However, with the financial power that the Toon boasts, they can be optimistic that they can persuade him.

Furthermore, if Newcastle were to meet Burnley’s demands, would the Republic of Ireland international drastically improve their defence? Granted he could be a good option to have but he wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter. If they were to sign someone from Burnley, they should go for Nick Pope.

With the number of clubs interested, you’d think Collins will definitely earn a move to another Premier League side. It could benefit both parties as that £25million fee could be a big boost and improve Burnley’s financial situation somewhat. But that team should not be Newcastle United – they can aim higher.
