Newcastle United have already caught the attention of the footballing world following the club’s takeover, but they could show Europe’s biggest clubs they mean business by signing Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina.
The Serbian striker is one of the very few names that the mainstream media haven’t linked with a move to St James’ Park.
But he is exactly the type and profile of player similar to Mikel Oyarzabal that the new owners should be looking to build the team around.
Vlahovic has the potential to be box office
When Callum Wilson is fit, he is one of the best strikers in the Premier League.
Wilson will no doubt be one of the few players in the current team that could help propel Newcastle into a new era of success.
But the England international’s injury issues are always going to flare up which makes it increasingly difficult to have him as the sole big-name striker to lead the line.
At the age of 21, Vlahovic’s burgeoning reputation has seen him become one of the most sought-after striker’s across Europe.
Playing with Franck Ribery at Fiorentina last season, Vlahovic scored 21 goals in Serie A.
Only Luis Muriel (22), Romelu Lukaku (24) and Cristiano Ronaldo (29) scored more.
Like Lukaku and Ronaldo this summer, Vlahovic has his eyes set on a big money move after refusing to sign a new deal with La Viola.
With his contract expiring in June 2023, Fiorentina are going to have no choice but to cash in on their prized asset.
Already this season, Vlahovic has six goals from eight games.
Although Fiorentina currently sit fifth in Serie A, their chances of securing Champions League are slim.
Vlahovic scored a crucial goal for Serbia in their 1-0 victory against Luxembourg on Saturday which sent them above Portugal in their World Cup qualifying group.
Perfect signing for Newcastle
Vlahovic is a player that Tottenham Hotspur have been courting, and following his decision not to sign a new deal at Fiorentina, he will seek a new challenge.
With the striker only being 21, the new Newcastle owners could convince Vlahovic to become the poster-boy of their project.
It is anticipated that Newcastle’s rise to challenging for major trophies will be steady and Amanda Staveley has requested patience.
Signing Vlahovic might not make as big as impact in the short-term as signing Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur, but the Serbian could prove to be a better signing over the long term.
