Newcastle United are inevitably going to be linked with the biggest names from the biggest clubs, but one player they should target is Mikel Oyarzabal.

The 24-year-old is currently one of the most in-form players in European football right now.

He assisted both of Ferran Torres’s goals in Spain’s 2-1 victory against Italy in the Nation League semi-finals before opening the scoring in last night’s defeat to France in the final by the same scoreline.

The Real Sociedad star also scored three goals and made two assists in his nation’s six Olympic games which saw them lose to Brazil in the Gold medal match.

From eight La Liga games so far this season, Oyarzabal has six goals and one assist which has helped his team to third place with 17 points going into the October international break – the same amount as leaders Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Oyarzabal a massive talent

Only Karim Benzema (9) has scored more La Liga goals than Oyarzabal this season.

In his last four seasons, he has scored more than 10 Spanish top-flight goals in each campaign and he looks well on track to smash his personal best this time around. He also made 34 assists from his last four La Liga seasons (Transfermarkt).

The new Newcastle owners are probably going to want to make a massive big-name signing which marks the dawning of a new era, but also shows we mean business and it’s more of a statement of intent.

In Oyarzabal, whoever the new illustrious manager of Newcastle will be, they will have a winger who can play on either side and could be the perfect partner to compliment Allan Saint-Maximin on the other side.

Newcastle are going to want show their financial muscle with the big clubs, by signing some of their biggest stars, but they could also build a formidable team by signing the best of the rest.

Oyarzabal very much fits into that category. With a contract until 2024, he’s playing in a Real Sociedad team who are in the Europa League, but they don’t have the financial power Newcastle now possess to challenge for major honours.

Teams like Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund have all been credited with an interest in the £63m Oyarzabal, but if Newcastle can convince him the Spaniard of the project we are undertaking in the summer, he could be a massive coup.
