Darren Bent believes Southampton skipper James Ward-Prowse should be a transfer target for Newcastle United.
It’s set to be an exciting summer at St James’ Park, the second transfer window since the Saudi-backed takeover went through.
The Magpies suddenly have incredible resources, and no longer have the threat of relegation like they did in January. Even then they were able to do sensational business, which makes the summer window even more tantalising.
Plenty of big names have been linked, with targets emerging from across Europe. And TalkSPORT pundit Bent thinks the Magpies should launch a bid for a Premier League star in Ward-Prowse.
Newcastle are the ‘type of club’ who should be in for James Ward-Prowse
The former England striker spoke about Ward-Prowse’s future on TalkSPORT on Tuesday morning, looking at a potential move away from St Mary’s. And Bent believes he’s the type of player who Newcastle should be chasing.
“I kind of feel like the type of club who should be in for that player is Newcastle. They’re in a rebuild,” Bent said.
He also suggested Tottenham and Arsenal as possible suitors.
Of course, there is nothing to suggest Ward-Prowse will leave Southampton this summer. It’s just a typical TalkSPORT conversation after the midfielder bagged a brace in the Saints’ 2-2 draw with Brighton.
Newcastle haven’t been linked with the 27-year-old, but he would certainly be a dream signing for many Toon fans. He’s the kind of sensible signing the Toon Army would love to see at St James’ Park.
Ward-Prowse has been incredible for Southampton. He’ll likely go down as a legend on the south coast. But could he play at a higher level?
Newcastle could be a perfect match for JWP
Many will believe he can, and Newcastle are a club trying to reach that higher level. And Ward-Prowse feels like the perfect type of player who the Toon should be targeting.
We need to sign the right characters, and that’s exactly what Ward-Prowse is. He’s a leader at Southampton, dominating midfield with his desire and energy whilst impressing also in possession. And of course, there’s his set piece ability…
Our midfield drastically improved when Bruno Guimaraes arrived, and he could look even better alongside Ward-Prowse. The England international is the type of player that Newcastle fans would love.
This summer is the next vital step in our rebuild, and we need to get our recruitment right. Big names like Paul Pogba have been linked, but someone like Ward-Prowse would be a much smarter signing.
