Newcastle United have been linked with a summer move for Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.

It’s no surprise to see St James’ Park mentioned as a possible destination for the France international. Basically every big name player seeking a transfer has been linked with Newcastle in the past six months.

Pogba is no different, with his contract at Old Trafford set to expire in the summer. And The Sun claim Newcastle are ‘monitoring’ his situation alongside various other clubs. Juventus, Real Madrid, PSG…and Aston Villa have also been mentioned as possible destinations.

It would be hugely surprising to see Newcastle launch a bid to sign Pogba. Yes, he is a huge name in world football that would boost the profile of the club. And yes, he is a World Cup winner. But is he really the type of character Newcastle need right now?

But if the unimaginable does happen and Pogba signs on the dotted line with the Magpies, he could be set for an awkward reunion.

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey left his mark on Paul Pogba in 2019

Pogba has had some interesting clashes with Newcastle in years gone by. In the 2017/18 campaign, we saw both sides of the Frenchman.

He dominated the game in a 4-1 win for Man United at the start of the season, but the return fixture ended in embarrassment. Pogba barely got a sniff up against Mo Diame and Jonjo Shelvey, and was left sulking on the bench.

One year later and Pogba had another run in with Shelvey, but this one wasn’t pretty. Man United won 2-0, but the big talking point after the game was a rather vile challenge from the Toon midfielder on the Red Devils’ number six.

Shelvey shockingly got away with it, not even receiving a yellow for the studs up challenge. It prompted a huge response from the mainstream media (shock), while Pogba took issue himself on social media.

Three years on and the pair could now be teammates in the Newcastle United midfield.
