The Magpies’ squad is lacking quality, and the threat of relegation is very real.
The priority ought to be the signing of at least two central defenders. Preferably ones that have Premier League experience.
But Newcastle also need to sign a creative midfielder.
The team needs someone who can make things happen behind Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin.
It hasn’t really happened for Joe Willock so far this season, but he was never really going to match what he did last term.
One thing Newcastle should be looking to do in January, is sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United.
According to Eurosport, the 28-year-old is open to leaving Old Trafford.
There is every chance he’ll be allowed to depart, because he can walk away as a free agent next summer.
The Red Devils won’t want to lose him for nothing, and so a deal is there to be done for someone.
Eurosport say West Ham are keen to re-sign Lingard after his brilliant loan spell last season.
Newcastle need to make sure they win the race. Interestingly, there were claims recently that representatives of Lingard were present at Newcastle’s game with Tottenham Hotspur.

It’s going to be difficult, West Ham are obviously going very well in the Premier League. And obviously, Lingard has already had great success there.
But Newcastle are crying out for a player like him.
Someone who can create and score goals, but also work hard. His tenacity is definitely an underrated aspect of his game.
Given the struggles of Manchester United, it’s a surprise he hasn’t featured more this season given his work off the ball.
He’s there for the taking, and Newcastle must elbow aside the competition for the £15 million-rated star.
