Newcastle have been monitoring Royal Antwerp full-back Aurelio Buta, and contemplating a move, but could be set for disappointment as Wolves are closing in on a deal, according the the Express.

The Angolan born defender, who has represented Portugal at all youth levels up to under-20, has been impressive for the Belgian side, following a move from Benfica in 2017.

Initially there on loan, they made the deal permanent in the summer of 2018, and his consistently good performances have caught the eye of Premier League talent-spotters.

Newcastle – along with Watford – have been represented at some of his games this season, but it appears Wolves has stolen a march on their rivals, ahead of the January transfer window.

The report claims Wolves have a “unique relationship with super-agent Jorge Mendes”, and hope to use that to cement a deal for the talented 22-year-old.

Krafth has struggled, and Manquillo could yet be sold

It seems Newcastle are still looking at right-backs, despite signing Emil Krafth in the summer, with the Swedish international struggling in his early attempts to adapt to Premier League football.

Steve Bruce, of course, also has Javier Manquillo as back up to first choice DeAndre Yedlin, but there is a chance that the Spaniard may be sold in January, which would see the Magpies wanting to add another option.

But is a signing who fits perfectly into the mould of a Mike Ashley preferred target. He is still only 22, will be available at a relatively small fee, and is almost certain to see his stock rise after a year or two in England’s top division.

If Bruce is serious about wanting to bring Buta to Tyneside, he will have to move quickly, as the race for players ahead of the transfer window opening is hotting up significantly.
