Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Royal Antwerp right-back Aurelio Buta, a player we urged them to look at just five days ago in a previous article.
The player is also being chased by Premier League rivals Watford and Wolves, according to the Birmingham Mail, as well as a number of Championship clubs.
The Portuguese defender has been very impressive since moving to Belgium from Benfica, and made 20 appearances for Antwerp last season.
He has been in superb form over the first few months of this season too, with him playing all but 12 minutes of their 12 league games, and he has one goal and three assists to his name.
Having watched videos of Buta, it is clear he has excellent ball control, and blistering pace, and would almost certainly be an upgrade on any of the current right-backs we have, despite him being just 22-years-old.
Emil Krafth has not looked like challenging for a starting place
The gamble to bring Emil Krafth in as competition for DeAndre Yedlin has simply not worked out, and a player like Buta would be a breath of fresh air to the position.
Having hoped Newcastle would be looking at the player, it will be fantastic news if the reports claiming he is on the club’s radar are true.
With our centre-backs looking solid – and a goal-scoring threat – so far this season, as well as Jetro Willems in great form, at left wing-back, while also having Matt Ritchie close to returning, it is just right-back that continues to underwhelm.
Signing Buta would rectify that, and with his young age, and a moderately small fee of around £5 million, he would fit perfectly into the mould of what a modern Newcastle United signing should be.
