In a perfect world, Newcastle United fans would be back at Wembley this weekend for the Carabao Cup final.
The Magpies had an incredible run in the Carabao Cup last season, making it all the way to the final. Cup fever gripped Tyneside, but it ended in heartache as Eddie Howe‘s side were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United.
But it was a fantastic journey, and one that fans want to experience again.
And we nearly did, with Howe’s side being knocked out of this season’s Carabao Cup in agonising circumstances.
Newcastle were moments away from a semi-final. They were 1-0 up in the quarters away to Chelsea, looking on course to hold on for victory and book their place in the final four.
Then a Kieran Trippier error handed Chelsea an equaliser in stoppage time, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side going on to win the game on penalties.
It was a crushing way to be eliminated, and it is even more crushing when you look at what the Blues are up against this weekend.

Liverpool have major injury problems ahead of Carabao Cup final
Chelsea are facing Liverpool at Wembley in the 2024 Carabao Cup final on Sunday, but it will be a rather depleted Reds side.
Jurgen Klopp is dealing with a large amount of injuries to key players for the final. He is set to be without Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota and Dominik Szoboszlai, while Curtis Jones, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are also unavailable.
Liverpool are going to be missing some really important players, which means it is a great chance for Chelsea to lift silverware. And that would be some achievement for Pochettino, given how much his team has struggled this season.
Seeing the amount of injuries that Liverpool have, it makes it all the more agonising that Newcastle were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea. We would have been favourites against Middlesbrough in the semis, and then had a great chance to go one step further than last season versus an injury-ridden Liverpool.
Instead, we will have to focus all of our attention on the FA Cup.
