When rumours of Newcastle’s interest in Phil Jones emerged, Manchester United fans were giddy with excitement.

The fact they are so keen to see their player head to St James’ Park says a lot.

But the feeling isn’t mutual. Newcastle fans don’t want to sign Phil Jones just as much as Manchester United fans want rid of him.

The rumour came from the Mirror, who claimed the Magpies could pay £12million for the centre-back. West Ham are also reportedly keen.

But as a lot of fans point out, Jones is certainly no better than what we’ve already got.

Steve Bruce has six centre-backs at his disposal, all of whom have excelled at some point over the last 12 months.

And with the manager now shifting to a back four, our need for centre-backs is even less.

We need to be getting rid of them, not signing more.

Jones once looked like the future of England’s defence, but he’s now a shell of the player people thought he would be.

Hopefully we don’t see him holding up a Newcastle shirt when the transfer window opens… whenever that may be.

Jones to Newcastle? No thank
