Phil Jones became a Manchester United player in 2011, tipped as a future Old Trafford legend and England captain.

Almost nine years later, he’s been linked with a move to Newcastle United.

According to the Mirror, the Magpies are willing to pay £12million for the defender, with West Ham also keen.

It’s fair to say the 28-year-old hasn’t lived up to the hype.

The Red Devils paid Blackburn £16.5million for him back in 2011, having emerged as a diamond in the rough at Ewood Park.

He only made 35 Premier League appearances for Blackburn, but it was clear he had a lot of potential during a difficult time for the Lancashire club.

Sadly, he hasn’t really achieved that potential.

Throughout his Manchester United career he hasn’t been settled. Often seen as a utility man, Jones never had a true home in the starting XI.

As time went by, injury problems would hinder his development. He would become better known for his facial expressions rather than his defending.

Manchester United fans are desperate for the 28-year-old to leave, even telling Newcastle fans that they don’t want any money for him.

Their desperation to get rid of Jones says it all. This is one the Magpies should avoid.
