Rafa Benitez’s contract talks seem no nearer a conclusion, so inevitably speculation mounts over potential replacements, with Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger recently mentioned.

And following reported comments made by former Chelsea and Manchester United supremo, Mourinho, over the weekend, his is the name that had fans talking.

Reportedly asked during a Portuguese tv interview about what his plans are, and where his future might lie, he said he would only go somewhere that has a “project that convinces” him, and he would “evaluate” any approach – even from a non-winning club.

His intriguing answer would appear to leave the door ajar, should Newcastle not convince Rafa to stay, and hope to lure an elite manager to take over, in an attempt to appease disgruntled and angry fans.

Jose is thought to feel an affinity with Newcastle United and St James’ Park, with it being the spiritual home of his great friend and mentor Sir Bobby Robson.

Many have said his apparent love for the club, and its fans, will lead to him managing the Magpies one day, and that day may arrive sooner rather than later.

Mourinho was mentioned as possible Rafa successor

But when the question was put to fans whether they would have Mourinho at St James’ Park, should Rafa not stay, the replies were very mixed.
