Steve McClaren and Newcastle United were far from a match made in heaven. But maybe things would be different for him at Sunderland.
According to the Northern Echo, the former England boss has contacted the Black Cats about the managerial vacancy following Jack Ross’ sacking.

There seems to be whole host of names in frame to be the new Sunderland manager, but McClaren is the biggest name to throw his hat in the ring. However, the Mackems want him to take his hat back out of the ring.
Sunderland fans know exactly what happened the last time he was in the North East. They watched on with glee as McClaren guided Newcastle towards the Championship. They celebrated as their side easily hammered McClaren’s Magpies 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Since his sacking, Newcastle have appointed Rafa Benitez, got relegated, came back up, survived in the top flight, lost Rafa and appointed Steve Bruce. While Sunderland suffered two consecutive relegations, got taken over, cried on Netflix, lost at Wembley twice and saw another takeover attempt collapse.
A lot can change in three years. And some Newcastle fans are desperate to see McClaren back in the North East, considering him and Sunderland as a perfect match.
