After sacking Jack Ross and rumours of a takeover collapse, could anything make this week worse for Sunderland fans? Well, news that ex-Newcastle boss Steve McClaren has applied for the job would suggest it can.

The Northern Echo reported the former England manager – who was labelled The Wally With The Brolly – has been in touch with the club to declare his interest.

If he were to get the post, it would make it a hat-trick of north east managerial jobs for McClaren, thanks to his former spells on Tyneside and at Middlesbrough.

It is unlikely to go down well with Sunderland fans, and would ironically see them managed by a former Newcastle boss, while we are presided over by a former Sunderland one.

Just like the fans’ position over Steve Bruce on Tyneside, it is not particularly the fact that he had managed their rivals that will irk them, but more down to the sheer incompetence of the man.

He will still be viewed as an outsider for the job, with Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth and former Barnsley boss and Daniel Stendel thought to be two of the front-runners.

But for Newcastle fans, who have been having some fun at their rivals’ expense this week, it is nice for them to have the boot on the other foot, for a change.

From the initial social media reactions though, it certainly seems to have pushed the panic button among fans on Wearside.

It’s safe to say Sunderland fans don’t want Steve McClaren
