After the dissapointment of the defeat at Liverpool, there was some positive news for Newcastle fans, with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka claiming he could soon be signing a new long-term deal.
With reported interest from French Champions Paris Saint Germain in the summer, tying down the Slovakian stopper has been a priority for Steve Bruce.
Dubravka told the Chronicle: “I’m happy here. Since I came here, people have treated me really well. I can say that I feel at home here.
“I’m glad that people think that I can stay here for the longer-term.
“We’re in talks. I’m close. That’s what I can say.”
All goalkeepers make mistakes
Although there have been one or two errors from the 6ft 2in international keeper, keeping him on Tyneside would be a good move, and at the very least would increase his price-tag, if fans want to look at the cynical aspect.
Mistakes come hand-in-hand with being a goalkeeper, and there is not a single player in the position anywhere in the world, who has not done the same.
But he has largely kept us in games, and saved us a lot more points than he has cost us, and should Newcastle get Freddie Woodman to sign a long-term deal after his spell at Swansea, Dubravka would be the perfect mentor for him to learn from.
Despite many fans being underwhelmed at Steve Bruce’s appointment, and rumblings in the summer of Dubravka being unsettled after the departure of Rafa Benitez, that Dubravka wants to sign suggests there are positive things happening behind the scenes.
Let’s hope Dubravka is the first of many to sign a new deal, and hopefully become the heart of the side for years to come.
