Martin Dubravka put in a match-winning performance for Newcastle United against Southampton. They were 2-1 winners against the Saints on Thursday evening and became only the second side to beat them at home in the league.
New boys Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes got their first goals for Newcastle. However, in between the sticks, Dubravka put in a strong showing making a number of vital saves.
In the last 15 minutes or so the Saints really piled on the pressure. That was when the Slovakia international shot-stopper truly played his part in making sure Newcastle took all three points.
Eddie Howe spoke to BBC Sport on his change of approach as well as Dubravka’s shift in the second half.

He stated: “I felt we needed to change things tactically. Martin [Dubravka] had to make a couple of really good saves, but we weren’t under big pressure.”
Dubravka bounces back after being at fault for Toon conceding last weekend
The Toon were 2-1 winners last week at home to Brighton and Hove Albion. Whilst they did win the game, Dubravaka was a fault for the Seagulls’ goal.
He should’ve got to the ball ahead of Lewis Dunk, but was beaten to it in the air. The 33-year-old would’ve wanted to bounce park against Southampton and he did.

Not just that but it was arguably his best of the season. He had no chance of stopping Stuart Armstrong’s opening strike but would deny chances right at the death.
In addition, he commanded his area throughout the game as he collected swinging crosses that were whipped in. His overall goalkeeping abilities prove why he’s the best at the club.
Since he joined Newcastle, Dubravka has definitely saved more points than he’s cost them. His performance against Southampton is just one of many examples.

There’s no real reason why the Toon should look for a new goalkeeper, unless Karl Darlow or Freddie Woodman decide they want to move on. Then Newcastle should definitely pursue a backup keeper.
But the Slovakian is still proving with performances like this that he belongs in the starting XI. So whilst the owners will have a long shopping list, a new keeper should be near the bottom of their priorities.
