Manchester United clearly want a centre midfielder this month, with ESPN reporting last week that they were still interested in Toon midfielder Sean Longstaff.
The academy graduate was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford over the summer, but Manchester United fans aren’t keen about signing him now.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a long list of targets, and another name seems to have been added. According to David Ornstein of the Athletic, Manchester United are interested in signing Harry Winks from Tottenham this month.
The England international has fallen out of favour at Spurs since the arrival of Jose Mourinho, which could lead to him sealing a move to Manchester. Pep Guardiola is also keen, but would prefer a summer move.
But if Manchester United can get a deal done this month, that surely means Newcastle will keep Longstaff.
While the 21-year-old has really struggled this season, that doesn’t mean we should consider selling him. Longstaff showed last season that he has the talent to be a star in the Premier League. Unfortunately, he’s yet to recapture his form after a lengthy injury.
Winks is probably a more attainable target for Solskjaer, with the midfielder not fitting in under the Special One at Spurs. He plays a similar style to Longstaff, keeping the ball moving with quick and simple passes. Although Winks is a lot better at it…
Newcastle desperately need signings this month, so selling an important player like Longstaff shouldn’t be on the agenda at all.
The more midfielders Manchester United are linked with the better.
