Newcastle United can only have top target in January, so who is it?

As expected, the Magpies have relentlessly been linked with players since the Saudi-backed takeover went through in October.

Some rumours have been a load of rubbish, while others hold a bit more intrigue. And the closer we get to January, the real transfer targets are starting to stand out.

It’s obvious Newcastle need reinforcements. They need to improve all over the pitch. The main area of concern is defence, with Newcastle boasting the worst backline in the Premier League so far this season.

That’s why so many of the Magpies’ alleged targets operate at the back. And two of them are apparently our ‘top targets’.

Is Sven Botman our top target? Or is it Kieran Trippier?

Earlier in the week, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed that Sven Botman is ‘top’ of Newcastle United’s transfer wishlist. That was a big claim given the amount of players we apparently want.

But is Botman really top? Because the Telegraph claimed on Tuesday that Kieran Trippier is our number one target.

They can’t both be number one targets. Surely they’re prioritising one over the other?

It’s looking like a deal for Trippier is likely too, with talk of a deal intensifying. So does that mean Newcastle are going to sign their top target? Not if the Times are to be believed…

Jesse Lingard is Newcastle’s priority according to the Times

They reported on December 4th that Newcastle’s top transfer target is Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard. They described him as a ‘priority’ for the new Toon owners.

So who do we believe? All three would be incredible signings, but they can’t all be number one.

Something certainly doesn’t add up. Either it’s buzz words from the media or different people inside the club are saying different things.

Regardless, never has a club had so many number one, top, priority targets going into a transfer window.

Suppose it’s better than not being able to afford Hamza Choudhury on loan…
