Joe Willock was one of Newcastle United’s best players in the 4-1 win vs Fulham, and deserves a lot of praise for his performance.
The 23-year-old started in midfield alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff, and would probably have been named the Magpies’ man of the match had it not been for Miguel Almiron.
We gave Willock a 9/10 in our Fulham player ratings, which is the same grade as the Paraguayan received. But Almiron edges it for that stunning goal.
However, Willock’s performance must not be overlooked. He was outstanding at Craven Cottage, and ended the afternoon with two assists. It would have been a goal and an assist, but Callum Wilson robbed Willock of his first strike of the season.
Whether he scored or not, Willock’s overall display in the capital was fantastic. And Eddie Howe certainly liked what he saw from the £25million man.

Eddie Howe ‘delighted’ with Joe Willock’s performance vs Fulham
After the game, Howe spoke to BBC Newcastle. The Toon boss was full of praise for Willock.
“Joe did very well today,” he said.
“He shifted sides, went to the left of our midfield three. Did very well.
“Full of energy, full of endeavour. Desperate to score himself, but never allowed himself to become selfish. He was always playing for the team.
“Delighted with Joe and how his performances are developing. I think there’s a lot more to come but some good signs.”
Willock answered the critics
It was a big performance from Willock, especially after disappointing last time out. He was poor against Bournemouth, and there were calls for him to be left out of the starting XI on Saturday.
But he started in midfield like he has every game this season, and more than justified his selection. The former man was brilliant with and without the ball, making plenty of runs to create space for his teammates.
His passing stats were impressive too, completing 94% of the 51 passes he attempted. He moved the ball quicker too, which is what hindered him against Bournemouth.
In that game he was wasteful in and around the box, but that wasn’t the case against Fulham. Willock’s cutting edge was the foundation for a huge win at Fulham.
Willock will be very happy with his performance, and the fact Howe thinks he can get even better is very encouraging.
