James Trafford will regret failed Newcastle United move after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Man City promise

Newcastle United missed out on the signing of James Trafford to Manchester City during the summer transfer window.

At one point, it looked nailed on that the Englishman was going to move to the North East, but the deal never came to fruition.

Newcastle United made multiple bids for James Trafford during the now-closed summer transfer window, but they were swiftly rejected by Burnley. Little did the Magpies know, but Manchester City had matching rights.

After getting near Burnley’s valuation for Trafford, Man City swooped in, and there was nothing Newcastle could do about it.

Newcastle signed Aaron Ramsdale on loan as his alternative, with the 27-year-old’s Champions League experience perfect for the 2025/26 season. In the meantime, Trafford could now be in for a rude awakening after Man City confirmed the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Gianluigi Donnarumma promises success after signing for Man City

The signing of Donnarumma is an unbelievable coup for Man City. Arguably the best goalkeeper in the world who is coming off a Champions League win.

However, that spells bad news for Trafford, who will surely make way for the 26-year-old. In his first interview with Man City, Donnarumma has made it clear that he is ready to play for his new club.

“To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me,” Donnarumma said on Man City’s website.

“I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by the one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join.

“I have admired watching Manchester City for many years – so to now be able to play for the Club is a huge honour and a privilege.

“I cannot wait to meet my new teammates, the staff and the fans. Playing at the Etihad Stadium will be very, very special for me.

“I am very excited for what lies ahead and can promise that I will give absolutely everything to try and help the Club achieve even more success.”

James Trafford would have been the heir to Nick Pope at Newcastle United

The move for Donnarumma will surely leave Trafford wondering when he will next make a Premier League appearance. Donnarumma would not have joined Man City if he were to play second-choice to the former Burnley man; it would simply make no sense.

Newcastle’s first-team squad is stacked with goalkeepers, but Trafford could have been a part of it had a move come to fruition earlier in the window.

There was a clear pathway for the future England star to become first-choice on Tyneside. Nick Pope is now 33, and it remains to be seen how long he has left at Newcastle following a turbulent 2024/25 campaign.

At 22, Trafford would have been the natural heir to Pope’s No.1 spot, but he will be forced to watch on from the bench now that Donnarumma is at the club.

Even if he had to spend time on the bench at Newcastle upon signing, it was almost guaranteed that he would end up between the sticks before the end of the season, signalling the end of Pope’s reign.
