Newcastle United have suffered another brutal blow in the transfer market as James Trafford has agreed to join Manchester City from Burnley.

Just when fans thought the summer could not get any worse, the Magpies have been hit with yet another blow in a transfer market which has been far from kind to them.

Newcastle United were very interested in signing James Trafford from Burnley after agreeing a fee for the 22-year-old in 2024. Unfortunately, PSR concerns meant they were forced to back out of the deal.

After a record-breaking season in the Championship, Newcastle were eager to sign Trafford this summer and began talks for his signature in the early days of the window. Personal terms were not an issue between Newcastle and Trafford; it was just a case of getting the two clubs to agree a fee for the England international.

Trafford wants to join Man City after talks with Pep Guardiola, with a deal of around £27million agreed. A medical is now planned, and a journalist has stuck the dagger deeper into Newcastle’s chest after revealing a new detail of the deal.

Burnley accepted an offer from Newcastle United for James Trafford

Burnley wanted to sign Martin Dubravka, and there was a brief murmur that a deal involving the 36-year-old could have been in the offing.

Elsewhere, Paul Mitchell was alleged to be the reason why Trafford did not join Newcastle in 2024, so a deal could have been done a long time ago had it not been for the Magpies’ former sporting director.

Now, Trafford looks set to become a Man City player, returning to the club he left for Burnley in 2023. Newcastle will be gutted to miss out on a player who looked destined to join at one point. Trafford had even told people he was joining Newcastle, but it appears it was never meant to be.

Now, according to Journalist Tyrone Marshall, Newcastle actually had an offer accepted by Burnley, believed to be in the region of £27million. Man City matched it, and Trafford ultimately picked Guardiola over Eddie Howe.

Additionally, Stefan Ortega is set to leave Man City, so Trafford will likely have free rein to battle with Ederson for the No.1 spot.

Newcastle United need to seriously improve their negotiation tactics

Trafford joins a long list of players who have turned Newcastle down this summer. The 22-year-old saw a bigger and better project at his old club and ultimately decided a return to familiar environments was better for him.

It remains to be seen whether Howe pursues a move for another goalkeeper, but the initial feeling is that Newcastle will not sign another shot-stopper this summer and are happy with their current goalkeeper situation.

Whatever happens next, Newcastle simply have to improve when it comes to negotiating these deals. They are taking far too long and appear to be putting offers in which make the club look simply embarrassing.

There is still time to make something of this transfer window, but Newcastle have to kick on and make it happen themselves. Newcastle are hoping to sign Yoane Wissa this summer, so they will be keen on getting that deal done sharp.
