Another promising performance from Jacob Ramsey might yet spare at least some of Newcastle United’s blushes in the transfer market.
While the recruitment decisions Newcastle United made in the summer of 2025 have rightly been criticised, there is hope that Ramsey could yet prove to be a success.
It has been a strange season for the former Aston Villa midfielder. Ramsey has made 41 appearances for Newcastle, though only 23 have been starts.

It would be too much to suggest that he has fully convinced yet and there have been some notably poor performances along the way, but Ramsey did play a key role as Newcastle claimed a point at Nottingham Forest.

Playing reasonably well off the bench is perhaps the least Newcastle should expect of a player who cost a reported £38million, but it’s not been a luxury many of their recent signings – of whom Ramsey is actually one of the cheapest – have afforded them.
With that in mind, and with the bar maddeningly low, it’s worth pointing out.

Indeed, Ramsey came off the bench at the City Ground and provided the assist from which Harvey Barnes scored.
Collecting a ball from Bruno Guimaraes, the midfielder turned and delivered a perfectly weighted pass for Barnes, who finished well.
That was the 24-year-old’s second assist of the campaign to go along with his two goals and it built on strong performances against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks.
Ramsey could vindicate Newcastle United when they need it most
Newcastle had high hopes for Ramsey when they signed him, believing he could become an England regular.
Though that kind of status looks beyond him right now, perhaps he’s building some momentum heading into next season.
Newcastle’s summer signings have been ridiculed at times this season, and supporters could hardly be blamed if they didn’t have much faith about what is to come in the transfer market this summer.
A resurgence from Ramsey, however, might suggest the club still do know what they’re doing after all…
