Newcastle United are looking to sign a new right-back in January, and it looks like they are going to complete a deal for Harrison Ashby.
The West Ham youngster was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park during the summer transfer window. He looked set to join the Magpies, only for West Ham to pull out of the deal.
But with the January transfer window looming, fresh talk of Ashby to Newcastle has emerged, and it sounds like it’s a goer on this occasion.
According to 90min, the 21-year-old’s move to Newcastle ‘will happen after all’, with the defender set to arrive in January. The report adds that Ashby will cost a nominal fee.
That’s exciting news for the Magpies, as they have been looking for more depth on the right of defence. Kieran Trippier is first choice, but he is 32-years-old. Eddie Howe has been keen to sign a younger backup, and he looks set to get that with Ashby.

He has been described as a ‘top player‘, and is clearly someone who Newcastle think can develop into a Premier League regular.
Getting another youngster through the doors will be brilliant business by Dan Ashworth, but it also hints that our interest in another Premier League right-back is over.
Newcastle have no need for Cody Drameh with Harrison Ashby deal
Another young right-back linked with Newcastle is Cody Drameh. The Leeds defender is reportedly on the Magpies’ radar, and is keen on a move away from Elland Road.
The 20-year-old has some big clubs chasing him, and Newcastle were in the mix. He sounded like a decent alternative to Ashby.
But with the West Ham academy graduate now set to head up north, Newcastle will surely end their interest in Drameh.
While he is a talented youngster, Newcastle have no use for both of them. Whoever signs will struggle to get in the team ahead of Trippier, so signing a second right-back would be a waste of resources.
Regardless, it’s good to see Newcastle making plans for the future, assessing multiple options who can fill the position required.
Ashby and Drameh are two exciting young full-backs, and it looks like one of them is heading to St James’ Park. As for the other, he will have to hope someone else takes him away from Leeds in January.
