Newcastle United supporters are loving Malick Thiaw’s impact, even if some Serie A fans are a little confused.

Eddie Howe wanted to add another centre-back to his Newcastle United squad and made Malick Thiaw his top target.

Newcastle wanted Thiaw in 2024, but couldn’t secure a deal with Serie A side AC Milan.

The Magpies finally signed Thiaw this past summer, agreeing a deal worth around £35million.

Thiaw has impressed Bruno Guimaraes with his early displays, and Newcastle fans absolutely love him.

Forget the Serie A doubters, Malick Thiaw fits at Newcastle United

Newcastle’s official X account posted praise for Thiaw after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Fulham, simply stating ‘what a player’.

Magpies fans followed suit, but Serie A fans also chimed in with their thoughts on Thiaw.

Some of those fans – of an AC Milan persuasion or otherwise – offered some doubting comments about the German defender.

‘Selling an own goal machine to a dumber league for way more than he’s worth,’ said one fan, while another added, ‘Really? He’s very bad, come on.’

‘Is he really that good in PL? He was average but talented in Serie A,’ said another, with one comment adding ‘bang average in Serie A but ‘Rolls Royce’ in England.

Clearly, the sentiment from those who watch Italian football is that Thiaw wasn’t all that impressive during his time in Milan.

Here’s the thing, though: not every player suits every league.

Thiaw’s pace and power make him ideal for the trend of physical, duel-heavy action in the Premier League.

For every case of a Thiaw leaving Serie A and improving in the Premier League, you can point to Scott McTominay or Rasmus Hojlund, who have excelled in Italy after leaving England.

Thiaw and Sven Botman have immediately struck up a brilliant partnership, and that instant connection has helped the German settle straight in.

Everything has clicked for Thiaw at Newcastle, and Magpies fans will judge him purely on his displays in the famous black and white stripes, rather than his time in Milan.

Different players suit different leagues and different teams, and Thiaw looks to be right at home in the Premier League with Newcastle.

Malick Thiaw is benefiting from a fresh start at Newcastle United

Thiaw spent three years at AC Milan, but his time at the San Siro was plagued by instability.

Injuries halted Thiaw’s momentum, and playing under four managers – Stefano Pioli, Paulo Fonseca, Sergio Conceicao and, briefly, Massimiliano Allegri – didn’t help either.

Thiaw struggled under Conceicao, and his summer move to Newcastle may have simply come at the right time.

Newcastle are pretty settled with Howe in charge, and he is allowing Thiaw to build a strong partnership with Botman.

In truth, this looks to be a deal which has worked out for both Newcastle and Milan, though Thiaw is the biggest winner of all as he shows off his quality in the Premier League.
