Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Sandro Tonali’s contract status at Newcastle United.
It’s been a challenging start to the new season for Newcastle United, who are three points worse off in the Premier League than they were at this stage a year ago.
However, given the difficulties in the transfer market, mounting injuries, added games with the Champions League and a new attack needing to get settled, it’s no great surprise.
Eddie Howe’s side were just starting to click before the international break, too, with exciting victories over Nottingham Forest and Union SG.
One player whose form hasn’t dipped at all, though, is Sandro Tonali, who has continued to put in excellent displays in the heart of midfield.
Tonali is bound to attract transfer interest if he keeps playing to such an impeccable standard and Newcastle want to secure their position by signing him to a new contract.
But Fabrizio Romano’s update on that front could be considered worrying.

Fabrizio Romano says Sandro Tonali hasn’t started contract talks with Newcastle
Tonali signed for Newcastle in a massive £55m switch from AC Milan in 2023, though his first season was curtailed by a lengthy betting ban.
The Italian has been sublime ever since returning to action, but is yet to sign a new deal at St. James’ Park.
Tonali is signed until 2028 after penning a five-year deal upon his arrival, but so was Alexander Isak, who left for Liverpool on deadline day.
Newcastle are keen to tie him down for even longer as a result, but transfer guru Romano is yet to hear of talks getting underway.
Romano told GiveMeSport: “At the moment, I’m not aware of negotiations over new deal.
“Newcastle love Tonali, but at the moment it doesn’t involve new deal.”
Why Newcastle haven’t started talks with Tonali, it’s not a concern
Though Romano’s update could be concerning for fans, it’s really nothing to worry about.
Reports emerged last week that Newcastle were holding off on opening talks with Tonali over a new deal until new sporting director Ross Wilson was in place.
The i News reported that Tonali is ‘‘in line for a new deal’ alongside Tino Livramento and Sven Botman, once the position vacated by Paul Mitchell in June was filled.
Newcastle confirmed the appointment of Wilson on Saturday afternoon, with the experienced executive joining from Nottingham Forest after a successful two-and-a-half-year spell.
Wilson signed 43 players at Forest and many of them, including Elliot Anderson and Anthony Elanga, were major factors in the Midlands club’s best season in decades.
Before he can think about transfers at Newcastle, though, Wilson’s biggest priority will be securing Tonali’s future.
