Newcastle United were linked with a move for Edin Dzeko over the weekend and simply put, he would be a brilliant signing for the club.
The Bosnia international striker is supposedly on the club’s radar ahead of January, despite the fact he only signed for Inter Milan in the summer.
Dzeko has already scored 11 goals this season, suggesting he isn’t showing signs of slowing down at 35 years of age.
The star has really hit the ground running for the Nerazzurri, who are currently sitting top of Serie A.
Dzeko’s goals have come against some big sides, including Juventus, Atalanta, Roma and Fiorentina.
He is clearly still making important contributions despite his advancing years, and there is probably a good chance he could do well in the Premier League.
Dzeko, of course, has previous in the English top-flight.
He spent five seasons with Manchester City, and helped the club to win two Premier League titles.
He was particularly prolific from 2011-2014, scoring over 14, 14 and 16 goals in the league.
Newcastle need another goalscorer to help Callum Wilson, and Dzeko has pretty much scored goals wherever he has been, including for his country (60 in 118 games), whom he has 118 caps for.
Edin Dzeko would represent a different option for Newcastle
Newcastle do not currently have a physical presence up top.
Wilson can hold the ball up, but him doing that can sometimes take him away from the areas he needs to be in to score goals.
Potentially, a Dzeko-Wilson partnership could work very well.
Dzeko also has a creative side, as evidenced by his four assists this term. It’s reasonably likely he would be able to bring Wilson into play via flick-ons.
Newcastle need to endeavor to bring in players that are likely to hit the ground running.
Dzeko has scored goals in the Premier League before, and has been scoring goals regularly in Italy since leaving England.
He’s also good in big games – during his time in England, Manchester United (9), Tottenham Hotspur (6) and Liverpool (5) were the teams he scored the most goals against.
The focus for Newcastle, of course, needs to be on signing defenders in January. But the club have got to add another striker to help Wilson. Beyond him, there is a lack of quality, and everybody is aware of his injury record.
Dzeko has just signed for Inter. The Italians will likely not want to lose a key player in their title push. But money talks, especially in Covid times, and Newcastle have the financial might to do the deal.
He has a winning mentality, and is genuinely someone who could help the club ultimately survive relegation.
