There are plenty of fringe players who Newcastle United fans want to see in action against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

It is a chance for Eddie Howe to rotate his side, as he aims to keep his team fresh for the upcoming games against Burnley and Paris Saint-Germain.

While Howe will want to do well in the Carabao Cup, he will recognise that it is an opportunity to mix things up.

The likes of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall are likely to feature in some capacity, but the one player we hope to see named in the starting XI is Lewis Miley.

Hopefully Lewis Miley starts for Newcastle against Manchester City

After a sensational string of performances in pre-season, Miley is yet to feature for the first-team this season. The 17-year-old has not featured in any of Howe’s Premier League squads, but he was named on the bench for the 0-0 draw with AC Milan in the Champions League.

Throwing him in at the deep end against a team as good as Manchester City seems like a risk, but it is a chance that the teenager deserves.

He looked wise beyond his years during pre-season, going toe-to-toe with multi-million pound midfielders like Enzo Fernandez.

Miley did not look out of place against Chelsea, and was described as a ‘baller’ by Bruno Guimaraes after the game, with the Brazilian clearly a fan of the Geordie teenager.

At the start of the season, it was reported that Howe plans to use Miley in the early stages of the cup competitions. That opinion may have changed given that we are against Man City, but there is every chance that we could get knocked out. If he does not play Miley now, he might not get another chance until January when the FA Cup begins.

Therefore, it is the time to give Miley a start. His performances over the summer mean he deserves an opportunity, as he looks to make his first ever start for Newcastle United.

Going up against a top class team will be a learning curve for him, and a chance to see up close what it will take for him to become a regular Premier League midfielder.

Starting Lewis Miley would be a brave decision, but one that Howe hopefully makes.
