Dan Burn must help Newcastle United avoid disaster after risking ‘pelters’ with Sunderland comment

Dan Burn will need to be at his very best ahead of Newcastle United’s clash against Sunderland on Sunday. After all, it’s what he wanted.

Back in January 2024, Burn confirmed that he would like to see Sunderland promoted to the Premier League.

He admitted that he risked getting “pelters” from fans after that meeting by saying he would welcome Sunderland’s return to England’s elite division.

Newcastle United had just beaten their rivals 3-0 in an FA Cup third-round clash at the Stadium of Light, with the Black Cats a Championship side at the time.

This is our predicted Newcastle XI to face Sunderland! Would you make any changes?

I would start Miley, but I think Howe will go with Joelinton.

They eventually found their way back into the topflight in May 2025 and they have since impressed.

While Sunderland insist that they are underdogs for the Newcastle game, there’s little doubt they approach this one full of confidence, particularly given the Toon’s away record.

It’s going to be an intense battle and Burn, who seems likely to start, will need to be at his very best.

Dan Burn has to lead Newcastle United into battle against Sunderland

Burn has broadly been brilliant at centre-back this season, even if there are issues with his form at left-back.

The fact he’s a Geordie well-versed in the drama any Sunderland vs Newcastle United fixture brings obviously helps but, first and foremost, his leadership and quality will be needed.

With Sven Botman a doubt, options are limited.

Burn started alongside Malick Thiaw for the draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday and it would not be a surprise to see that partnership continue.

Who are you starting in midfield vs Sunderland? 🤔

Bruno and Tonali have to start, obviously.

Sunderland are one of the strongest teams at home in the Premier League. Four of their seven league victories this season have come on Wearside, along with 14 of their 18 goals.

They are a strong team but if Newcastle lose, it will be little short of a disaster.

Howe’s side just haven’t convinced this season and do not look likely to qualify for next season’s Champions League on current evidence.

Should they fall to defeat against Sunderland, major questions will be asked and Burn may perhaps wonder why he ever wanted them back in the first place.

Dan Burn is out to protect his 100% record vs Sunderland

Burn is a Newcastle fan, so will be more than aware of what this derby brings.

He will no doubt be telling the players who aren’t from the area about the importance of the clash, along with the likes of Lewis Miley.

Still, Burn is not particularly experienced in actually playing against Sunderland, which perhaps explains his desire to see them back in the big time.

He started as Newcastle beat their rivals 3-0 in the FA Cup back in January 2024 but that is his only appearance against them.

It is, however, a 100% record of sorts and one that will hopefully be protected.
