Bruno Guimaraes rarely puts a foot wrong in a Newcastle United shirt, but he has been particularly impressive over the past week.
The January transfer window has been and gone, with Newcastle unable to get the midfielder they wanted. They were targeting a ‘number eight’, but the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules would not allow it.
The Magpies needed to sell before they buy, but in the end no major names left. That means that Newcastle will be sticking with the midfielders that they have got right now, which is slightly worrying given the ongoing injury issues.
Joelinton is out for the season, while it is unclear when Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson will be back. As for Sandro Tonali, he is suspended until August due to betting.
That leaves Eddie Howe with just three centre midfielders that are available right now, the best of which is one booking away from a two-game suspension.

Bruno Guimaraes is so disciplined right now
When Bruno Guimaraes got booked during the defeat to Manchester City last month, it was his ninth of the season. That means he is one yellow card away from hitting 10, which will result in a two-game suspension.
That yellow card was his fourth in as many games, which led to concern from fans that another was not far away. And that would be devastating for Newcastle, who are a much worse team without Bruno Guimaraes.
But the 26-year-old has been incredibly disciplined since that Man City game. He has played with such intelligence, never giving the referee a chance to dish out a yellow card.
For all of his tough tackling and inevitable bookings, Bruno really is a disciplined player. While he might get booked a lot, he very rarely gives the referee a chance to give him a second and send him off. It only happened once this season when he was lucky not to receive a second yellow away to West Ham.
Bruno is more than capable of playing within himself. He knows when he can take a risk and make a tackle, and he knows when he can’t.
That was the case against Aston Villa and Luton Town, and it is why Toon fans should be hopeful that their Brazilian superstar can avoid a second suspension of the season.
