Alan Shearer says whether he thinks Bruno should’ve been sent off v West Ham

At times against West Ham on Sunday, Newcastle United rode their luck.

Indeed, while Eddie Howe’s side dominated the ball in swathes, they started so poorly and fell behind to Tomas Soucek’s opener fewer than ten minutes into what was ultimately a 2-2 draw.

Only days after a famous win over Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle took a while to get going.

A bad start could have been even worse had Bruno Guimaraes been sent off. Minutes after being booked, the £40m midfielder brought down Hammers star James Ward-Prowse but controversially avoided a second yellow card.

That, of course, would have changed the game and pundit Darren Ambrose hit out at the decision.

Now, club legend Alan Shearer has weighed in.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Shearer admitted the Brazil star should have seen red in east London on Sunday.

“Just for clarity and just to show there’s no bias I thought it should have been a red card,” he said.

“I know Bruno didn’t agree with this one, but he does stick his leg out there and it is rightly a yellow card and then 90 seconds later the second tackle and he’s fortunate. On another day I think the correct decision there would have been a yellow and therefore a red.”

Strange decision by Guimaraes

Granted, the tackle on Ward-Prowse only came after a poor ball from Sandro Tonali forced him into action but to have even put himself in that position was a strange decision from Guimaraes.

Newcastle got lucky in that incident, there’s little point denying it. Still, Mateo Kovacic did something similar for Manchester City against Arsenal later on Sunday, so at least there was a degree of consistency across the weekend.
