Newcastle United are still yet to make a new signing this summer.

The new Premier League season kicks off in less than a month’s time, and the Magpies are still scratching around for new faces, with funds said to be tight.

Supposedly, the club have one or two things bubbling away according to Steve Bruce (via Chronicle).

But fans are getting worried, with the proposed takeover now shelved of course.

According to a piece from The Athletic today, Bruce mainly wants to revamp his midfield this summer.

Obviously, the main priority is to bring Joe Willock back to the club.

But that depends on him and Arsenal, with Newcastle waiting on both player and club.

According to The Athletic, Isaac Hayden’s position in the team is currently ‘uncertain’.

Bruce has a ‘firm’ desire to reform his engine room. But Hayden is not somebody he should be looking to oust.

The Englishman has never been one for Hollywood balls across the pitch or violating opponents with flashes of skill.

But he does do the ugly stuff rather well.

He is tenacious and industrious, and arguably, all good midfields need an individual like this to be competitive.

Not only is Hayden a good footballer and effective at the job he does – breaking up play and recycling possession – he is also very highly regarded.

Fans love him for his passion and commitment to the badge, and his teammates respect him and see him as a leader.

The 26-year-old’s position in the Newcastle starting XI should not be under threat going forwards. People like Jonjo Shelvey’s and Jeff Hendrick’s should.

There is too much inconsistency in their games. With Hayden, you know you are always, at the very least, going to get someone bringing the fight, and that is something that can spread to other players.

So if this reform Bruce has planned for the midfield involves Hayden losing his regular starter status, then that would be one big risk.
