Newcastle United may need Anthony Gordon to do something he might not particularly want to next season.
Gordon is coming off a mixed season for Newcastle United. The 24-year-old scored nine goals while registering seven assists in 42 games, representing a significant drop-off from his output during the 2023/24 campaign.
There were mitigating factors, however. Gordon returned to pre-season late after forming part of the England squad who got to the Euro 2024 final, while he suffered with injuries and a high-profile red card during the campaign itself.
He lost his place to Harvey Barnes after his sending off against Brighton in March, which ruled him out of the Carabao Cup final.
Even before that, however, Barnes had started to force his way into the side. That meant Gordon changed position, moving out to the right side of the attack for some games earlier in the season.
Sadly for Gordon, he might need to do something similar next season.

Anthony Gordon does not want to change position at Newcastle United
Gordon told people he didn’t want to play as a right winger for Newcastle, which could be an issue next season.
Indeed, while the transfer window is still in its early stages, the club seem to be having problems landing a new player there.
Bryan Mbeumo was too expensive for Newcastle, while Geordie Boot Boys understands fellow target Anthony Elanga could cost as much as £60million.

That may prove too much for Newcastle, who have proven they will refuse to overpay for their targets.
With that in mind, Gordon could be needed out on the right unless a fresh signing comes in. Jacob Murphy would likely be the starting option there, but he cannot be expected to start every game next season once the Champions League impacts the schedule.
Anthony Gordon’s stats as a right winger
Barnes could also feasibly play on the right but, frankly, he looked a better left winger than Gordon last season.
Gordon played on the right seven times last season, from where he contributed two of his six Premier League assists.
| Position | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Left winger | 26 | 8 | 5 |
| Right winger | 7 | 0 | 2 |
| Striker | 2 | 1 | 0 |
| Attacking midfielder | 2 | 0 | 0 |
| Second striker | 1 | 0 | 0 |
It was his fine cross from which Alexander Isak scored a brilliant header against Arsenal in November. Clearly, he can do a job there, even if a new signing would be the ideal outcome this summer.
Whether he likes it or not, playing Gordon on the right of the attack could be a potential internal solution if Newcastle cannot land their targets this summer. Murphy cannot do it all on his own next season.
