Amanda Staveley named something ‘really awful’ four years ago and Newcastle United still haven’t done much about it

Amanda Staveley described the Newcastle United training ground as “awful” shortly after the PIF takeover but there has still been little progress on the move to a new one.

The Newcastle United training ground has undergone some upgrades since the PIF takeover but they can only go so far.

The facilities pale in comparison to the other clubs Newcastle are looking to challenge at the top end of the Premier League and Champions League tables respectively.

Newcastle want to build a new training ground but the lack of updates is indicative of the problems besetting the club right now.

Newcastle United fans still in the dark over new training ground

Clearly, the potential move to a new training ground is a big decision and cannot be rushed.

Still, the fact it’s been talked about for so long with little in the way of official updates sums up the problems at the club.

Everything seems to take an age at Newcastle. They remain without a sporting director, a new CEO or many new signings. Even after Anthony Elanga had been spotted arriving at Newcastle Airport, it took days to officially announce the deal.

The Newcastle United owners also haven’t issued any update on the plans to potentially move stadium, either.

In isolation, delays can be explained away. When everything seems to take an age, however, questions must be asked about just how smooth the processes behind the scenes really are.

What Amanda Staveley said about Newcastle United’s training ground

The Newcastle takeover finally went through in October 2021 and Staveley quickly talked about the need to improve the training ground.

In fact, the former club director and co-owner gave a rather frank assessment of the set-up there just after the change in ownership was officially announced.

Speaking to reporters about the plans the ownership had for the club in October 2021, she spoke of the need to improve on Newcastle’s “really awful” training ground.

“It’s really awful,” she said (via The Guardian).

“There’s no point having fantastic players if there’s nowhere suitable for them to train.

“PIF have great ambition but this is a long-term investment and things take time. To reach the top of the Premier League you don’t just need great players, you need robust, strong foundations – and we have to build them.”
