Acting quickly is the only way Newcastle can land Darwin Nunez ahead of PSG and co - opinion

It looks like Newcastle are going to find it hard to sign £59million-rated Darwin Nunez this summer, with Manchester United, Chelsea and PSG now linked.

The Magpies are reportedly looking to add another striker to their squad during the transfer window. The Athletic have reported that the majority of their budget could go on a forward.

That says a lot about the type of striker they want at St James’ Park. Multiple names have been linked – one of which being Nunez.

The Daily Mail claimed last month that the Uruguayan striker is an option for Eddie Howe, alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Alexander Isak and Patrik Schick.

But if Newcastle are to sign Nunez, they’re going to have to move ahead of multiple major clubs in the race to secure his signature. The Athletic claim that Chelsea, Manchester United and PSG are the frontrunners.

However, all three of those clubs have issues behind the scenes right now, and that could give Newcastle their one and only hope of securing the 22-year-old ahead of them.

Quick deal is the only way Newcastle can beat Man United and co to Darwin Nunez

With 10 points separating Newcastle from the relegation zone, it looks like Premier League safety is all but secured. That means Howe and his team can start looking towards next season.

The summer window will be used to evolve the squad, with multiple players expected to leave. There will also be reinforcements, as the new owners look to take Newcastle away from relegation peril.

Ideally, we can get our business done early on. And that might give us our only shot at signing Nunez from Benfica.

While Man United, PSG and Chelsea are apparently leading the race, all three clubs have issues that may delay them in the transfer window.

Manchester United are yet to appoint a new manager. It would be a real surprise if they finalised any signings before the new boss joins and assesses the squad.

PSG could have a similar problem, with speculation that Mauricio Pochettino could leave the Parisians this summer.

As for Chelsea, they are in the midst of takeover uncertainty. While they might be leading the race at the moment, as it stands they don’t have any money to sign him. They aren’t allowed to trade.

Of course, that will change when a takeover goes through, but who knows when that will happen. As Newcastle fans, we know all about delays when it comes to a change of ownership.

While we might not be able to offer European football or an immediate shot at honours, we can give Nunez a quick move. That might favour Benfica – the sooner they get their money, the sooner they can reinvest it into their own squad.

If PIF want to land Nunez, they simply have to move now.
