While Newcastle United’s transfer business appears to be finished for the summer, the strongest team in the country could be about to get even stronger.

That is because Premier League champions Manchester City are closing in on a deal to sign Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to the Telegraph, Man City have agreed a deal in principle to sign the midfielder from Wolves, who is set to cost Pep Guardiola’s side £60million.

It will be another marquee signing for City, who have already brought in Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku this summer. Now they look set to add Nunes to their squad, as they look to become even stronger following last season’s treble-winning campaign.

The deal for Nunes will further enhance Guardiola’s midfield options, while it will also have a former Newcastle United transfer target questioning his decision to turn down a move to St James’ Park.

Kalvin Phillips pushed further down the Manchester City pecking order

With Nunes set to arrive from Wolves, Kalvin Phillips will suddenly be even further down the Man City pecking order. He has not played a single minute of football this season, despite holding out hopes that his second campaign would be much better than his first.

Phillips signed for Man City last year for £42million, and has already won pretty much all there is to win. However, he did not play an integral role. Instead, he was a peripheral figure.

That led to speculation over a move away, with Newcastle interested in signing him. It was claimed earlier this summer that the Magpies asked about bringing Phillips to Tyneside, only to be told that the England international wanted to stay and fight for his place at the Etihad.

That was a commendable decision, but it looks like it will be the wrong one. Now there is no chance of a move to Newcastle, with no more new signings expected before the transfer window closes on Friday.

There is still time for Phillips to get a move, and there will no doubt be plenty of clubs willing to give the 27-year-old a chance. However, Newcastle will not be one of them.
