Jason Cundy has heavily criticised Newcastle United for their underwhelming performances this season.

Newcastle just managed to edge past Blackburn last night on penalties and book their spot in the FA Cup quarter final but it was far from comfortable and could have and maybe should have gone the other way.

Speaking to a Newcastle fan on talkSPORT, Cundy slammed Newcastle for their ‘terrible’ performances in the Champions League and now dropping down the Premier League table.

Cundy says Newcastle have been ‘terrible’ this season

Newcastle exceeded everybody’s expectations last season by finishing in the top four despite there being a big gap in quality with some of the squads who finished below them.

Eddie Howe received a lot of praise for his overachievement as well as getting his side to a cup final and a trip to Wembley for the first time in two decades, but all of that looks to have worn off now.

While it was a particularly difficult group that they were draw in for the Champions League, Cundy still thinks that Newcastle were very underwhelming and embarrassed themselves in the competition.

Domestically, Newcastle now sit 10th in the league after a heavy defeat to Arsenal and could drop into the bottom half should Chelsea win their game in hand, and Cundy thinks there is serious cause for concern.

On the show, Cundy said to a Newcastle fan: “We’re not talking about where you’re going to go, football is about the now it always will be.

“You’re 10th. Chelsea have been terrible this year, we win our game in hand we go above you, you’re in the bottom half of the table.

“Right now, it’s been an underwhelming season.”

On the Champions league, he added: “You were terrible. You picked up four points. If’s, what’s and maybe’s, who knows.”

Newcastle are miles off the pace this season

Last year Newcastle could pride themselves off of the fact they were one of the toughest teams to play, had one of the best defences in the league and would always play with a high level of intensity.

This season, however, it’s fair to say that they’ve lost that edge to their game and, while injuries have massively impacted their campaign, it’s just not been good enough.

With their last home win coming in the middle of December, and even that was against 10-man Fulham, Newcastle fans should have every reason to be concerned about the team’s form.

It was a big positive that they managed to get the result against Blackburn last night but there were still a number of signs that they are yet to emulate the impressive form they showed last season.
