DeAndre Yedlin left Newcastle for Galatasaray in February and has now made another interesting career choice.

The 27-year-old has joined the ownership group of American club San Diego Loyal.

The Loyal play in the USL Championship, the second tier of the American football pyramid.

Yedlin will continue his playing career and explained his decision to ESPN.

“We had great conversations. My values and morals, both on and off the field, matched with theirs.

“So I think for both of us it was a good match. It happened pretty organically and naturally. I was fortunate that they accepted me to be part of their club.”

In September, the Loyal forfeited a 1-1 draw with the LA Galaxy II because their Elijah Martin was targeted with a racist slur.

A week later, they protested by walking off the field against Phoenix Rising after an anti-gay slur was directed at Collin Martin.

Yedlin said: “The fact that a professional sports club decided to forfeit a game and potentially lose a playoff spot because of issues that I believe are above sport was huge to me.”

The Loyal have only been in existence since July 2019 and Yedlin clearly feels he’s spotted an exciting opportunity to get involved at an early stage.

It’s rare for active players to get involved in owning clubs but the report says he knows his role will be limited to some extent – but still wanted to get involved.
