Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has spoken about reaching the milestone of 50 Premier League goals.
Wilson told the club’s official website that he has now set his sights on getting 100.
But he also admitted that he didn’t expect to score that many in the top flight – even though he did always expect to end up there.
He also said that his attempts were held back by two serious injury blows he suffered while at Bournemouth.
“To have an award for scoring 50 goals in that league so far is obviously an amazing achievement and something I never thought I’d do,” said Wilson. “The aim now is to try and get to 100 before I finish my career.
“Having played in non-league, the Premier League seemed such a long way away and to ultimately get 50-plus goals in that league is an honour. Did I ever think I would get 50 goals in the Premier League?
“Probably not, although I knew I’d be a Premier League player. I feel also that I would have got to 50 a lot quicker having not had setbacks throughout the journey. I’ve missed almost two seasons with injury.
“There’s goals there you could have had and I would have been a lot closer to 100. I’ve got a long, long way to go to one hundred but I’ve got many, many more years left in me.”
Newcastle knew they were getting a proven Premier League goalscorer in Wilson last summer.
He’s shown that again this season and will hope for an injury free campaign next time around.
He’s got 47 goals to get into the 100 club, which is four decent seasons at top flight level really.
Wilson is 29, but the longevity of someone like Jamie Vardy should encourage him that he can play in the top flight into his mid-30s.
