Why Trippier was screaming at Longstaff during Newcastle’s win v Everton

For all of the celebrations at Goodison Park last night, Kieran Trippier was not happy with one of his Newcastle United teammates.

Midway through the second half, the cameras caught Trippier berating Sean Longstaff, shortly after the Newcastle midfielder had been denied a penalty.

The 25-year-old had been wiped out in the box by James Tarkowski, but neither the referee nor VAR decided it was worthy of a spot kick. This angered Longstaff, who remained on the floor in pain, much to the annoyance of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

As play resumed, Longstaff then went down again, leading to accusations of playacting from the crowd and commentators.

But it was clear that the local lad had a problem, and it prompted an angry response from his captain.

Trippier was telling Longstaff to go off or get treatment

According to the Chronicle, Trippier was not happy with Longstaff. They state that the 32-year-old was telling him to either get treatment from the Newcastle physio or be substituted.

However, the defender’s appeals were ignored by Longstaff, who did not listen. This appeared to anger Trippier more, who could be seen turning to Fabian Schar and then the Newcastle bench.

Longstaff did eventually come off, replaced by Alexander Isak who produced arguably the best moment of the game. His incredible run from the halfway line allowed him to set up Jacob Murphy for Newcastle’s fourth goal of the evening.

It was quite staggering to see Trippier so furious with Longstaff. He obviously wanted the midfielder to put the team first and get his ankle sorted. But Longstaff wanted to carry on, obviously believing he could shake it off.

We will see if he has shaken it off on Sunday when the Magpies face Southampton at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe stated after the game that Longstaff eventually indicated that he needed to come off, and had his fingers crossed that he will be fine for this weekend’s game.
